For Maureen Walpert, home has always been her safe haven.
She has lived in Port Macquarie for over 30 years and loves the comfort and familiarity of her community. Even though her health has changed in recent years, one thing has remained clear — Maureen is determined to stay independent for as long as possible.
That’s why, in 2019, she chose St Agnes’ Catholic Parish as her home care provider. With support for personal care, cleaning, and transport, Maureen has been able to keep living the life she values, surrounded by the things and people she loves.
Finding strength through loss
Maureen is a quiet, gentle woman who has faced more than her fair share of heartache. In the space of just a few years, she lost her husband, daughter, brother, and nephew — all while managing the challenges of Parkinson’s Disease.
“There were times I didn’t think I could go on,” Maureen reflects. “But I thought, come on, Maureen, you’ve got to rally around for your grandchildren.”
With four grandsons, one granddaughter, and three great-grandchildren, family has been her anchor. Visits from them remain some of her happiest moments.
How home care makes daily life easier
While Maureen once walked everywhere, balance issues now make it difficult for her to get out safely on her own. “Without home care, I don’t know how I’d manage,” she says.
Her support worker, Natalie, has been by her side for years, helping with showers, cleaning, and transport to appointments. But for Maureen, it’s more than just practical help — it’s the comfort of knowing someone she trusts will be there.
“It’s hard to have somebody come into your house that you don’t know. It takes time,” Maureen explains. “But Natalie is so kind, and over the years we’ve built a great rapport. Now, I enjoy the company.”
Natalie agrees. “I met Maureen during COVID when she was very anxious. I spent time just chatting with her so she could get to know me, and that made all the difference. Since then, our relationship has grown — and I’ve loved being part of her journey.”
Staying connected to the things she loves
Although knitting and embroidery are more difficult these days, Maureen still enjoys colouring and writing, and she always finds encouragement from her home care team. Transport assistance also means she can get to appointments and social outings she’d otherwise miss.
“If not for the carers and the transport assistance, I wouldn’t be able to get out of the house,” Maureen says. “I’m very grateful to the whole team — they’re all so lovely and encouraging.”
Support that makes independence possible
Maureen’s story is just one example of how the right support at home can help people stay safe, connected, and independent — even through life’s toughest challenges.
