Classic Cars Spark Memories at Emmaus

Thursday 5 June 2025 was a morning to remember at Emmaus, as the Port Macquarie Heritage Car Club rolled into the car park with a stunning display of classic vehicles.

Residents and car club members came together to admire the beautifully maintained cars, share stories, and enjoy a relaxed morning of coffee, biscuits, and conversation. The event was a hit with everyone, sparking fond memories and lively discussions about motoring history.

Residents from both Emmaus Home and Emmaus Village joined in, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. Many reminisced about the cars they once owned or drove, and the stories flowed freely. From roadsters to motorcycles, every vehicle seemed to unlock a personal tale.

Two residents, Terry Murray and Ron Hodge, had particularly memorable experiences. Terry, once a keen car enthusiast, fondly recalled buying a new car every couple of years and cruising in his beloved roadster. “I loved hooting along with the wind in my hair,” he laughed, though he admitted his wife wasn’t as fond of the convertible—especially when it messed up her hair!

Ron Hodge, who recently celebrated his 94th birthday, was captivated by the engines and mechanics. Having worked for 22 years with Lewis Brothers—renowned builders of classic Australian wooden power boats—Ron’s passion for engineering was reignited. He shared stories from his book on the company’s history, including their record-breaking speed achievements in 1963. Ron’s enthusiasm was infectious as he spoke of his lifelong love for motorcycles and the joy of maintaining his own fleet of vehicles, which at one time included seven motorcycles and three cars.

The car club members shared that they felt warmly welcomed and thoroughly enjoyed the visit—especially the coffee and biscuits! They’re already looking forward to returning.

With just 50 permitted drives per year and a modest annual fee of $50, maintaining these heritage vehicles is a labour of love. But for both the car owners and the Emmaus residents, the joy they bring is priceless.

It was a morning filled with nostalgia, laughter, and connection—proof that everyone has a story to tell, especially when classic cars are involved.
