NDIS clients have a ball at Kings Creek Retreat
A group of our NDIS clients and staff enjoyed a weekend away at the Kings Creek Retreat in Krambach between 5-7 April 2024.
Undeterred by the torrential rain of an East Coast Low, the group, made up of NDIS Support Workers, Penny and Hakan, and clients Tanjya, Sally, Kelly, Danielle, Chris, and Martin, carefully ventured an hour and a half down the road to arrive at Krambach on Friday afternoon for their long-anticipated adventure. The group was also joined by Tanya and Jodi, her independent support worker.
The group was welcomed by the owners of Kings Creek Resort, Spud and Carla, who showed the group around. Accommodation ranged from a Tipi, a caravan or a cabin located close to the showers and toilets, so it was fun as everyone sorted out their sleeping arrangements.
Thanks to the large covered and indoor areas, the rain during the first night did not cause too much disruption. For dinner it was Spaghetti Bolognaise cooked by our hosts followed by an evening of entertainment: shooting pool, colouring in, playing air hockey, Donkey Kong games or just relaxing in the lounge or socialising. All while listening to the music from the Jukebox. Some people played UNO until late that evening.
Despite the worry of being flooded out or in, the weekend turned out great. With the sun shining on the Saturday, everyone was able to enjoy all there was to offer at this fantastic site, even though it was still a little soggy underfoot.
On Saturday morning it was a Bacon and egg breakfast cooked on the BBQ by Danielle and Hakan with everyone chipping in to help with setting the table and clearing things up afterwards.
Making the most of the sun and the lovely outdoor areas, Saturday had a relaxed theme with a mixture of meeting and feeding the horses, going for walks, socialising with each other and our lovely hosts, resting and relaxing, and just enjoying this lovely country environment. Carla ran a craft session where participants made a mobile.
Spud and Carla cooked a burger lunch and, for dinner, Spud cooked pizzas, using their own special recipe, in a pizza oven they built themselves.
After dinner, it was another evening of fun and games. Some people decided to retire to bed early while others sat up playing UNO again. Just when the UNO game seemed like it would never end, Kelly won it with a flourish so everyone could go to bed!
After more bacon and eggs for breakfast on the Sunday morning, the group fed the pig the scraps from the weekend, went for a walk, relaxed, listened to music while playing the games and packed up ready to leave later in the morning. Carla ran another craft session in which participants made a feather head accessory.
After wraps made with love by Carla and Spud for lunch, the group headed for home.
Owners of Kings Creek Retreat, Carla and Spud Hickman sent this lovely feedback about the support staff who attended the weekend:
“Your dedicated, fun-loving staff are a credit to you. So nice to work with people who genuinely care for their participants”.
The group sends a big thank you to Spud and Carla for their wonderful hospitality. All agreed they had the best time together in the relaxed environment of the Kings Creek Retreat.
